Latest R&D Journal focuses on supercomputer results

ibm logoThe latest edition of the IBM Journal of Research and Development examines some of the many applications of massively parallel computer systems, specifically the IBM Blue Gene supercomputer.

The incredible power of supercomputers means scientists and engineers are able to model research that was beyond reach only a few years ago. Massively parallel systems such as IBM Blue Gene/L are beginning to have a significant impact on geophysical imaging for oil and gas reserves, the discovery of new drugs, nuclear fusion, neurophysiology, and climate simulation. And while supercomputer research traditionally fell to academia, now it is being used by business as well.

“It is by no means a stretch to say that the solutions to some of the previously intractable problems described in this special issue can be transformational in industries such as life sciences and energy,” says Tilak Agerwala, Vice President, Systems, IBM Research Division, in his introduction.
