Johanan (Hebrew יוֹחָנָן) is a Hebrew name meaning ‘the LORD is gracious’. Other forms of the name include John and Yochanan.
Several people in the Hebrew Bible are given the name Johanan:
A Johanan, son of Kareah, is mentioned in the Hebrew Bible as a leader of the army who led the remnant of the population of the Kingdom of Judah to Egypt for safety (against the advice of Jeremiah – see Jeremiah 43:8-22), after the Babylonian dismantling of the kingdom in 586 BC and the subsequent assassination of Gedaliah, the Babylon-appointed Jewish governor (2 Kings 25:23-26, Jeremiah 43:5-7). He had earlier (at least according to the account in the book of Jeremiah), tried to warn Gedaliah of the plot of Ishmael son of Nethaniah to assassinate him, a plot which was apparently instigated by Baalis, king of Ammon (Jeremiah 40:13-16), and which Gedaliah, to his cost, refused to believe. After the assassination of Gedaliah, Johanan ben Kareah leads the army against Ishmael, and fights him at Gibeon…
