Some 240 workers will be affected by shutdown

GEORGE TOWN: NEC Computers Asia Pacific Sdn Bhd is closing its Asia-Pacific headquarters in Bukit Tengah Industrial Estate, Penang.

Executive vice-president Bernard Saw said some 240 workers would be affected by the shutdown.

“We will initiate the shutdown process in May and the whole exercise should be completed before the year ends.

“After the shutdown, we will still maintain through our authorised service providers support for our laptop and personal computers (PC) users,” he told StarBiz.

Saw said demand for its products in Asia-Pacific was not large enough to support the group’s expansion plans.

“The facility in Penang is involved in manufacturing, research and development activities, providing logistic support, treasury and marketing activities.

“It ships out laptops and personal computers to South-East Asian countries, Hong Kong, Australia, New Zealand and India,” he said.
