The first Google Doodle was a reference to the Burning Man Festival of 1999. The doodle was designed by Larry Page and Sergey Brin to notify users of their absence in case the servers crashed. Subsequent Google Doodles were designed by an outside contractor, until Larry and Sergey asked then-intern Dennis Hwang to design a logo for Bastille Day in 2000. Hwang has been designing the Google Doodles ever since.
Clicking on a Google Doodle links to a string of Google search results about the topic, which can drive a lot …

The latest edition of the IBM Journal of Research and Development examines some of the many applications of massively parallel computer systems, specifically the IBM Blue Gene supercomputer. The incredible power of supercomputers means scientists and engineers are able to model research that was beyond reach only a few years ago. Massively parallel systems such as IBM Blue Gene/L are beginning to have a significant impact on geophysical imaging for oil and gas reserves, the discovery of new drugs, nuclear fusion, neurophysiology, and climate simulation. And while …

Like salt used as a preservative, high concentrations of dissolved minerals in the wet, early-Mars environment known from discoveries by NASA’s Opportunity rover may have thwarted any microbes from developing or surviving.
“Not all water is fit to drink,” said Andrew Knoll, a member of the rover science team who is a biologist at Harvard University, Cambridge, Mass.
Opportunity and its twin, Spirit, began their fifth year on Mars last month, far surpassing their prime missions of three months. Today, at a meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of …

It is expect that nearly every household in the United States has at least one radio. The invention of the radio was dependent upon two previous discoveries: the electromagnet and telegraph.
The electromagnet was discovered in 1825. This discovery opened the doors to global communication! Five years later, Joseph Henry successfully transmitted an electric current via wire which was stretched over a mile and which caused an electromagnet to trigger the sounding of a bell. Thus, the electric telegraph was born. One of the most recognizable names associated with the telegraph …

Treatment of malignant mesothelioma can be very difficult for a wide variety of reasons. First and foremost, mesothelioma can be difficult to correctly diagnose and may not show up in a patient for decades. This can create problems for treatment because with mesothelioma, as with all cancers, treatment is more difficult the longer the disease has been allowed to progress. In addition to the difficulties created by delayed treatment of mesothelioma, the disease often does not respond to traditional cancer treatments, further complicating treatment. Also, the organs that are …
