Pada tahun 1984 projek ANTHENA MIT cuba membangunkan sistem komputeryang mampu menyambungkan beribu-ribu komputer kepada rangkaian dalaman. Projek ini pada asalnya dimulakan oleh Brian Reid dan Paul Ascente daripada Universiti Stanford dan dinamakan projek W. Projek ini kemudannya diteruskan oleh Bob Scheifler (MIT) dan Jim Gettys (Digital Eqp. Corp.) tetapi kemudiannya dikenali sebagai X.
