The quake struck 214km (133 miles) south of Aceh’s capital of Banda Aceh, the US Geological Survey (USGS) said.
A local tsunami alert was issued and later lifted by the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center.
The site is very near that of 2004′s 9.2 magnitude earthquake. About 220,000 people were killed in the Indian Ocean tsunami the quake triggered.
The epicentre of the latest quake was at a depth of 61.4km, about 66km (41 miles) south-west of Meulaboh district, the USGS said.

P1 W1MAX potong ads
The controversial P1 WiMAX broadband advertisement which repeatedly stressed the word “potong” (cut) is being reviewed by the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (SKMM).
Deputy Information, Communication, Culture and Arts Minister Heng Saei Kie said the advertisement was being reviewed to determine whether it contravened the Content Code.
In her reply to Datuk Mohamed Aziz (BN-Sri Gading), Heng said all advertisements, prior to being aired, need to be approved by the Censorship Board under the Home Ministry.

Debris and an oil slick were spotted in the Atlantic off the South Carolina coast as the search expanded Friday for an F-16 fighter pilot whose jet collided with another during night training exercises.
“We did have a report of an oil sheen which might be consistent with fuel from the fighter jet itself and we have also had a report of a small amount of debris,” said Capt. Michael McAllister, commander of Coast Guard Sector Charleston.
